Books are fun to read.
本は読むことが楽しい。
It is fun to read books.
本を読むことは楽しい(itは形式主語)。
すべての形容詞が形式主語を使えるわけではない。
Your car is too small to carry all of us.
あなたの車は小さいので私達全員を運べない。
× it is too small for your car to carry all of us.
＊itを使ってこのようには言えない。なぜならTo carry all of us is too small.とは言えないため。smallなのはyour car。対象が備わる性質、大きい、小さい、赤いとか黒いなどはitを使えない。
I’m sorry to say this.
これを言ってごめんなさい。
× It is sorry for me to say.
＊itを使ってこのようには言えない。なぜならTo say is sorry for me.とは言えないため。感情表現はitを使えない。
These documents are ready to sign.
これらの文章は署名する準備ができている。
× It is ready to sign these documents.
＊itを使ってこのようには言えない。なぜならTo sign these documents is ready.
とは言えないため。these documentsがreadyのため。
＜it is でないとだめな例＞
It is possible for me to go with her.
私が彼女と一緒に行くのは可能です。
×I am possible to go with her.
＊for me=Iを主語として言えない。なぜならI≠possibleではないため。to doすることがpossible。
I’m too busy to talk to you.
私は忙しくて君に話せない。
× It is busy for me talk to you.
＊話すことが忙しいとなってしまうため。
It is impossible for me to follow you.
私はあなたについて行くのが不可能だ。
× I am possible to follow you.
＊私が不可能になってしまうため
＜形式主語itが使えない表現＞
I’m sorry to hear that.
私はそれを聞いて残念だ。
× It is sorry for me to hear that.
× To hear that is sorry for me
それを聞くことが残念となってしまうため。残念なのはI。
