副詞や形容詞による心的態度の表現

話してがどのような考え、感じでいるかを副詞や形容詞を使って表すことができる。

His story must be true.
Certainly,his story is true.
I’m sure his story is true.

彼の話は本当だ確信してるという感じが表現されている。

話しての確信度を表す助動詞と副詞形容詞の対応
可能性は上ほど高い。

certainly/surely         must
probably                   will
possibly                    may
maybe                      may           確信度５割ぐらい
perhaps                    might/may　確信度は２、３割

She might perhaps have a talent for painting.
彼女はもしかしら絵の才能があるかもしれない。

mightとperhapsを共にに使い「もしかして」を強調している。

It appears to me that he is right and you are wrong.
私には彼が正しくて、あなたが間違っていると思える。

このような形でも心的態度を表現している。いろいろな形があるということを覚えておこう。

I’m positive he’s in here somowhere.
私は彼がこのあたりのどこかにいると確信している(確信度がかなり高い)。

You are absolutely right.
君は絶対に正しいよ(確信度が高い)。
